Dr. Cummings got her doctorate at UNC-Greenboro and has served on the faculty at Auburn University. She has taught at Warren Wilson College, UNC-Asheville, Guilford College and at UNC-Greensboro. She worked for many years as the psychologist on the children's psychiatric unit at Appalachian Hall and ran a therapeutic afterschool and early intervention program for children in Asheville.
She has over twenty years of experience evaluating and treating children, adolescents and families. She has extensive experience evaluating children in situations in which abuse allegations have been made. In addition, she conducts capacity to parent evaluations and custody evaluations.
In therapy, the focus is on understanding how the child's temperament, level of development and family situation contribute to the child's problems and then working on practical plans for addressing the problems. A cognitive-behavioral approach is used in treatment, along with behavior management and skills building. These empirically validated approaches to addressing psychological and behavioral problems are cost effective for the family in their investment of time and money in treatment.
When needed, referral for psychiatric consultation and medication evaluation and management are available within the Carolina Mountain Psychiatry practice.
